Recent annexations of land have stimulated Middletown, as it is known as one of the fastest-growing places in Delaware.

Surrounding the town itself are many affluent housing developments that are considered to be part of Middletown. Residents argue that the growth of the town rests primarily on these growing developments that attract a notable amount of higher-income families relocating from Philadelphia, New Jersey, and New York City.

Middletown is continuing to grow with the addition of a few new neighbors. Red Lobster and Olive Garden will soon be among the many restaurants that now reside in the once farm based area. The streets are lined with restaurants for all ages and all appetites from breakfasts at the Waffle House, Bob Evans or the new Sunrise Bagel to a sit down dinner at Applebees or Ruby Tuesdays to the fast foods such as McDonalds, Burger King, Subway, Nino's Pizza, Quizno's and Arby's. With any city Middletown also has its unique restaurants such as Middletown Pizza and Middletown Diner.Grocery stores such as Acme, and Super G have also joined the evergrowing Middletown. Hardware stores, such as Shone Lumber and Lowes, are another growing trend in the Middletown area. The Newest additions to Middletown are Hampton Inn, Starbucks, a new Shone Lumber building and a new bowling alley.
