Clayton is a town in Kent County, Delaware, United States. It is part of the Dover, Delaware Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,273 at the 2000 census.

Clayton is located at 39 °17 26 N, 75 °38 1 W (39.290576, -75.633745) GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.6 km (1.0 mi ), all of which is land not covered by water.

As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 1,273 people, 499 households, and 346 families residing in the town. The population density was 481.9/km (1,242.3/mi ). There were 524 housing units at an average density of 198.4/km (511.4/mi ). The racial makeup of the town was 90.26% White, 8.09% African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.34% of the population.

There were 499 households out of which 32.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.9% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.5% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.05.
