Burlington is a city in Kit Carson County, Colorado, United States. The population was 3,678 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Kit Carson County GR6. Burlington was originally laid out one mile west of its present location in 1887 by a man named Lowell in anticipation of the arrival of the railroad. In addition to having the location wrong, Lowell also did not have title to the land. When the railroad did arrive, the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, it built its depot at the present site of Burlington and those who had built in Old Burlington moved their building to the new townsite. Trains began running in 1888. Burlington is located at 39 °18 15 N, 102 °16 7 W (39.304293, -102.268683) GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.4 km (2.1 mi ), all land. As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 3,678 people, 1,287 households, and 840 families residing in the city. The population density was 676.2/km (1,752.6/mi ). There were 1,430 housing units at an average density of 262.9/km (681.4/mi ). The racial makeup of the city was 79.58% White, 3.72% African American, 0.54% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 14.79% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races.
