El Cajon ( IPA pronunciation : [ ›l k ™'xon] ) is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 94,869 at the 2000 census. El Cajon is located at 32 °47 54 N, 116 °57 36 W (32.798300, -116.960055) GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 37.7 km (14.6 mi ), all land. As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 94,869 people, 34,199 households, and 23,152 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,514.0/km (6,510.6/mi ). There were 35,190 housing units at an average density of 932.5/km (2,415.0/mi ). The racial makeup of the city was 74.00% White, 5.37% African American, 0.99% Native American, 2.79% Asian, 0.37% Pacific Islander, 10.49% from other races, and 5.99% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 22.47% of the population. There were 34,199 households out of which 37.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.0% were married couples living together, 16.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.3% were non-families. 24.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
