Avery is a census-designated place (CDP) in Calaveras County, California, United States. The population was 672 at the 2000 census. Avery is located on California State Route 4 and is home to the oldest continually operating hotel in the county, the Avery Hotel Restaurant & Saloon. Built in 1853, it was known as the "Half Way House," being located between Murphys and Calaveras Big Trees State Park.

Avery is located at 38 °11 44 N, 120 °22 0 W (38.195652, -120.366719) GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 11.7 km (4.5 mi ), all land.

As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 672 people, 276 households, and 195 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 57.5/km (149.1/mi ). The racial makeup of the CDP was 93.01% White, 1.04% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.30% Pacific Islander, 1.79% from other races, and 3.27% from two or more races. 4.32% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
