San Carlos ( Western Apache : Sengaa ) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Gila County, Arizona, United States. The population was 3,716 at the 2000 census. San Carlos is the largest town in the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation. The town is the government seat of the reservation. San Carlos' economy is underdeveloped and is based mainly on retail service industries, construction trades, and public administration. With 58.8% of the population under the poverty level and a median household income of $13,412, San Carlos remains one of the poorest Native American communities in the United States. San Carlos is located at 33 °21 4 N, 110 °27 36 W (33.351069, -110.459862) GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 22.9 km (8.9 mi ). 22.9 km (8.8 mi ) of it is land and 0.1 km (0.04 mi ) of it (0.34%) is water. San Carlos is located within the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation. As of the census GR2 of 2000, there were 3,716 people, 921 households, and 754 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 162.5/km (420.9/mi ). There were 994 housing units at an average density of 43.5/km (112.6/mi ). The racial makeup of the CDP was 4.55% White, 0.24% Black or African American, 92.63% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.24% from other races, and 2.05% from two or more races. 2.61% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
